This Week in Apple

iOS is expected to receive a radical redesign and an all-new numbering system at WWDC 2025. The rumor mill also has some more details about the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18. The situation with President Trump’s tariffs, meanwhile, continues to change nearly every week, and the outcome is sure to impact iPhone prices.

Here’s what happened during the past week, and why it matters.

According to a Wednesday report, Apple plans to switch to a year-based numbering system for its operating systems. Rather than iOS 19 and macOS 16, we’ll see iOS 26 and macOS 26, referencing the year 2026 that will arrive months after the usual fall OS updates.

AppleInsider has independently confirmed this information through people familiar with Apple’s pre-release operating systems. We were also provided with additional details surrounding macOS 26, including the supported devices and the OS file size.

Our take:

Users will find it easier to remember one version number for Apple’s operating systems rather than three. It looks like the company is trying to hide its new numbering system with placeholder names like macOS 16 appearing alongside macOS 26, based on what we were told.

Face ID might finally move under the display with the iPhone 18, according to a recent repeat rumor. The iPhone 19, meanwhile, might improve upon the design and technology through a full-screen display with no visible interruptions, claims the leaker.

Apple’s also said to be considering a 200MP rear camera and haptic buttons for future iPhone models, but it’s unclear if and when this will become a reality. As for the upcoming iPhone 17, a well-known analyst has suggested the base model will feature a 6.3-inch display comparable to the iPhone 16 Pro.

Our take:

Apple could source a 200MP rear camera from Samsung. The company has already used a similar sensor for its Galaxy S25 Edge, and its subsidiaries are part of Apple’s supply chain. Under-display Face ID is a likely change, judging by Apple’s prior iPhone releases, and the feature has been rumored multiple times.

President Trump’s so-called reciprocal tariffs, imposed on "Liberation Day," were blocked by a U.S. trade court on Wednesday. On Friday, however, an appeals court stayed the permanent injunction until June 9.

Depending on the outcome of the situation, Apple may decide to increase iPhone 17 prices because of Trump’s still-active “reciprocal” tariffs. The company’s stock price was not affected, but Apple is increasing iPhone shipments from India.

Our take:

The court’s ruling would have benefited end consumers, as it effectively prevented tariff-related price increases. It's going to be a complicated summer for Apple, but luckily, WWDC should remain unaffected unless the administration finds a way to charge companies for software updates.

A law firm in the United States claims that Apple's delay of Apple Intelligence and Siri may have violated federal security laws and is investigating whether to file a class-action suit. It is seeking submissions from investors who have purchased Apple securities and anyone who is "aware of any facts relating to this investigation."

Over in the EU, Apple has a month left to make its App Store rules compliant with the EU Digital Markets Act anti-steering provisions, or the fines will keep coming. Apple was fined 500 million euros ($567 million) and was given three months to pay it to the European Commission. If it doesn't pay on time, it will have to pay interest on the overdue funds.

Our take:

Apple has already been sued over how its Apple Intelligence ads included features that were later delayed, but the latest potential lawsuit has to do with investors rather than end consumers. As for the situation in the EU, it is still unclear if Apple has formally appealed, nor if Apple has made its 500 million euro payment.
