Even if you’ve never heard of Avianca or have no plans to visit Colombia, you should know about LifeMiles.

As a Star Alliance carrier, Avianca LifeMiles provides attractive redemption rates for Star Alliance partner awards, making it a program worth considering. In many cases, the award rates LifeMiles charges for domestic United Airlines flights are a fraction of what United’s own MileagePlus program requires.

LifeMiles charges just 6,500 miles for flights within California and 13,500 miles for transcontinental flights when there’s award space. You can also use LifeMiles to lock in international flights, like the 10-hour schlep from Washington, D.C., to Sao Paulo for 31,700 and 52,800 miles in economy and business class, respectively.

The best part? Avianca LifeMiles are some of the easiest airline miles to earn, as you can transfer points or miles from American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One and Citi ThankYou Rewards, and these transfers should process within an hour.

By earning points and miles on cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and Citi Premier® Card, you could be building up your LifeMiles balance.
