| 2 cards, great perks | by Kyle Olsen, Points & Miles Reporter | | | Selecting a credit card can feel overwhelming, so we’ve simplified the process with our card comparison tool. Let’s take a look at how the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card stacks up against the American Express® Gold Card.
The Chase Sapphire Preferred is perfect for travel rewards beginners, offering an impressive 5 points per dollar on travel purchases through Chase Ultimate Rewards. You'll also earn 3 points per dollar on dining, 2 points per dollar on eligible travel purchases and 1 point per dollar everywhere else. The best part? You can redeem your points at 1.25 cents each through the Chase travel portal or transfer them to 11 airline and three hotel partners, including World of Hyatt. All this comes at an annual fee of $95.
On the other hand, the Amex Gold card is a great go-to for its exceptional earnings. The card earns 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide and on takeout and delivery in the U.S., 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year), 3 points per dollar on flights, and 1 point per dollar everywhere else. The card also offers a $10 monthly dining credit and $10 in monthly Uber Cash. The annual fee is $250 per year (see rates and fees) but can easily be offset by the statement credits if you enroll in them. You can transfer Amex points to 17 airline and three hotel transfer partners.
Ultimately, it’s up to you which card you choose — or you might go with both to make the perfect pair.
