WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY 02/19/2019 BA HONORS THE 747 It's been a big month for double-decker airliners. Boeing's 747 marked its 50th birthday, on February 9, but the superjumbo A380 dominated headlines just days after that, as Airbus confirmed plans to shutter production of the world's largest passenger jet. Now, the 747-400 is once again in the news, thanks to British Airways' centenary celebration. This week, BA rolled out its first retro 747, proudly displaying the colors and logo of one of the carrier's predecessors, the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). Aviation enthusiasts surely don't want to miss this:
As the airline's special BOAC-themed 747 re-enters service with its spiffy new livery, you can expect to see it appear at British Airways destinations around the world, including New York-JFK today. Be sure to keep an eye on the aircraft's tail number, G-BYGC, to see where it'll pop up next. -Zach Honig, Editor-at-Large Posts in this newsletter contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. In what's almost certainly an industry first, one airline is planning to open a restaurant that'll serve meals featured in its onboard menu. It might not be the worst idea in the biz — at least one TPG contributor's been impressed with the carrier's inflight cuisine.
Given that one-day Disney World tickets cost over $100, people naturally look for ways to save money on their visits to the House of Mouse. When you see a big discount, however, it pays to be especially cautious. LOUNGE ACCESS We generally recommend making airline reservations directly through the airline to limit fees and headaches, and to increase flexibility if you need to make a change. Even Amex travel, which offers great service to cardmembers, has its caveats, as TPG Lounge member Gretchen E. explains: "The Amex portal does not sell refundable or flexible fares, so you can't choose your fare class, which limits your ability to upgrade certain tickets."
