I spend a lot of time in airplane seats, but I don’t spend much time thinking about all the work that goes into keeping those seats, and everything else on an airplane, in tip-top shape. Until now, that is.
Recently, TPG aviation reporter Meghna Maharishi had the opportunity to visit an American Airlines aircraft maintenance facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She spent the day touring the massive hangars and warehouses and speaking with some of the team that keeps the airline’s planes flying smoothly.
What she learned was pretty fascinating and gave me a newfound appreciation for the team and the skill it takes to maintain an airplane, from the everyday wear and tear to upkeep and maintenance.
When airplanes do run into mechanical issues, it can lead to delays and cancellations. I’ve been in the not-so-fun situation of sitting on the runway for over an hour while a mechanical issue was addressed. While frustrating, I much prefer that to running into an actual safety issue.
So when these issues do cause delays and cancellations, here are some things you can do:
